Ballroom & Latin
These classes may include any or all of the most popular Ballroom & Latin dances—Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Tango, Slow Waltz and Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, Slowfox, Jive, Quickstep, and Discofox/Hustle. Classes are offered at three skill levels—Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced—so you can join the class that suits you best and progress from there. Cha Cha The Cha Cha belongs to the Cuban family of Latin American dances that includes the Rumba and the international style Mambo. The pattern and structure of these dances are very similar to each other, but with one major difference: the "Cha Cha Cha" step! The Cha Cha Cha adds a cheeky quality to the dance and a catchy rhythm to the music, making it one of the best-loved of all Latin American dances. Rumba Seductive, smoldering, and sensuous, the pulsating rhythm and romantic music of the Rumba have made its appeal both ageless and universal. The Rumba evokes the courtship ritual of two love birds in the forest of Cuba. The rhythm and music is that of the beautiful, slow, and exotic Cuban Guajira. Samba The Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Afro-Brazilian origin, and is danced in 2/4 (2 by 4) time to samba music. During the Carnaval festival in Brazil each year, people enjoy dancing the Brazilian Samba in clubs and on the streets. There is a variant of the Samba called Ballroom Samba, which differs significantly from the Brazilian version of the dance. Tango The Tango, originally from Argentina, became a ballroom dance when drums were added to the music and it became a quick march. Although many people believe the Tango is complicated, because of how dramatic it looks, it is actually one of the easier dances to learn. Slow Waltz and Viennese Waltz The Waltz was born in 17th century Vienna, Austria—the name derives from the old German word "walzen," meaning "to roll, turn, or glide". The Waltz is danced in 3/4 time, and has a strong accent on the first beat, and a basic pattern of "step-step-close." By the end of the 19th century, there were two distinct versions of the Waltz: the Viennese Waltz, with its fast steps and turns; and the Slow (or English) Waltz, with its long, gliding steps. Social Foxtrot The Social (or Rhythm) Foxtrot is the perfect "starter" dance for a beginner, and can be danced to many kinds of music. It is easy to learn, easy to lead and follow, and fun to dance! For many couples, the ability to move smoothly and comfortably around the dance floor, while listening to their favourite mellow tunes, creates a pleasurable experience for both partners. Slowfox The Slowfox is a smooth, progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across the dance floor. It can be danced to big band (usually vocal) music. The Slowfox looks similar to the Waltz, but the rhythm is 4/4 time instead of 3/4 time. Although the name is similar to the Foxtrot, the Slowfox and the Foxtrot are two entirely different dances. Jive/Swing The term "Jive" encompasses several styles of dance including the Lindy Hop (1920s), Jitterbug and Boogie Woogie (1930s), Swing (1940s), Rock ’n‘ Roll (1950s), and Le Roc (1980s). Each style brilliantly reflects the mood of the era in which it was born. The Jive has endured as a favorite dance not only in the ballroom, but at any party, any place, any time. Quickstep Lively, invigorating, and fun, the Quickstep began as a combination of the Foxtrot and the Charleston, and has since become a fast and flowing dance. The Quickstep is danced to up-tempo melodies; if you find your foot tapping along to the music, chances are it’s a Quickstep. Discofox/Hustle The Discofox (sometimes called the Hustle) is believed to have originated in New York in 1970s, when movies like Saturday Night Fever made dancing the "in" thing for many people, especially men. It is usually danced to either disco music or contemporary pop dance music. The Discofox is fast and smooth, with the lady spinning almost constantly while her partner draws her close and sends her away flirtatiously. Two Step Two Step was invented in the mid-1960s by a teenage Buddy Schwimmer, as a way of dancing to the popular slow ballads of the time. Older dance manuals specified the best effect is achieved when dancers have a smooth gliding motion in time to the music. It can be danced to (mostly country) music with either a 2/4 or 4/4 time signature and has roots with the first level of Foxtrot. Basic two-step patterns are equivalent to those of many other progressive partner dances. Salsa Salsa's origin is from Cuba and is now worldwide popular. Latin rhythm, fun, sensual dance with lots of turns and twirls. Danced in a 8 beat rhythm. Line Dancing Line Dancing is a choreographed dance where dancers can stand in lines and execute a repeated sequence of steps in unison. It is most often danced to country-western music, but can be danced to a variety of other music styles as well, including Swing/Jive, Pop, Disco, Latin Rhythm..... Step Aerobic Step Aerobic is a classic cardio workout that is low-impact and high-intensity (burn 700-800 calories per hour!). You step up, down, and around a small platform in different patterns to boost your heartrate and breathing, and to strengthen your muscles--all to the beat of uplifting, energizing music! Dance Fitness/ Dance (Cardio) Dance Fitness is a fun, one hour class where students follow the teacher as she performs a series of dance movements/routines to various rhythms, including Salsa, Cha Cha, Jive, Disco, Hip Hop, Bollywood, etc. This is a great way to work up a sweat while enjoying different dance moves and musical styles. Dance Cardio is for singles that would like to learn different dances/dance styles. One hour filled with music styles, rhythms and dance steps. Low Impact Aerobics In a Low Impact Aerobics class, you get a full-body workout while performing various upper and lower body movements to music. In Low Impact Aerobics you always keep at least one foot on the floor, which minimizes the landing force of your feet. But don't worry--"low impact" doesn't mean "low intensity"! You will still significantly raise your heart rate to benefit your cardiovascular and respiratory system, but with less stress on your joints. Stretch, Strength & Tone This class combines Stretching and Strength Training. Stretching involves flexing specific muscle groups to improve elasticity, muscle tone, flexibility, and range of motion. Strength Training helps improve your overall health and well-being, and reduces your potential for injury by: increasing bone density; increasing muscle, tendon, and ligament strength and toughness; improving joint function; increasing metabolism; improving cardiac function; and elevating HDL (good cholesterol). Core Strength & Stretch This class is similar to Stretch, Strength & Tone, but focuses more on core (abdomen) strength. Head to Toe / Total body workout The Head to Toe class includes balance, strength, low impact, and cardio exercises. Learn how to improve your stability and prevent falls. In this class, we sometimes use equipment such as resistance bands, exercise balls, or gliders, and also work out on the floor. |
